News Japan Earthquake and Tsunami

The ship was owned by a shipbuilder in Ishinomaki, Miyagi, public broadcaster NHK reported, citing Miyagi prefecture police.
No further information was immediately available from Japanese media or prefectural police which AFP reached by telephone.

Friday's massive quake struck just under 400 kilometres (250 miles) northeast of Tokyo, creating a 10-metre (33 feet) tsunami wave that hit the Pacific coast of Honshu island near Sendai city.
The wave wreaked vast destruction, smashing ships into towns and tearing away entire houses.

Tsunami Japan A Large in Shakes Northern 8.9 Earthquake

The earthquake of 8.9 degrees recorded on the northern coast of Japan has caused at least one dead , numerous injuries, fires, power outages and mass evacuations of residents fearing further tsunamis.
For its part, the Taiwanese government has raised a tsunami warning following the quake and warned that the wave could reach the island after 10:30, Spanish time.
According to the Observation Center U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake had a magnitude of 8.9 degrees and occurred at only 24 kilometers deep. The epicenter was located 130 kilometers offshore of Sendai, on the island of Honshu (Miyagi Prefecture).


The quake has so far caused a ten-meter tsunami that has devastated everything in its path, including houses, cars, boats and farms, according to Japan's NHK television network. In Sendai there have been fires, the agency Kyodo. The authorities have warned of another possible tsunami of ten meters. This is the worst earthquake recorded in Japan in the last 20 years.

At least one person has died in Fukushima Prefecture, north of Tokyo, where four million homes have lost electricity. The population has been evacuated to higher ground. Besides, the earthquake, there have been numerous aftershocks and the capital Tokyo, some buildings have trembled.

DECLARE THE PHILIPPINES AND INDONESIA TSUNAMI ALERT

For its part, the Philippines and Indonesia authorities have declared a high alert after tsunami earthquake of 8.9 degrees recorded on the northeast coast of Japan.

Indonesia's meteorological agency said the alert in the east, particularly in areas of North Sulawesi, Papua and Maluku, and warned that the tsunami could reach to 12:00, Spanish hours.

For its part, the head of the Institute of Volcanology and Seismology of the Philippines, Renato Solidum, has reported that the authorities have declared an unusually high tsunami alert and is analyzing the situation to determine whether "alerts are raised." According to Solidum, a tsunami warning extends from the islands of Batanes in the north, the island of Mindanao in the south.
